June’s Member Spotlight: Merle Hlavka

The Hlavka name may be a household one in South Wasco County, but the man attached to it – genuine and kind-hearted Merle – prefers to carry on his father’s legacy from behind the scenes.

Merle recently honored me with an invitation to his and Donna’s home to visit about his life, the Wampinrock News , and Sportsman’s Grasscar Racing. I had the pleasure of meeting his daughters: They are warm and gracious. Merle and Donna’s home is filled with happy memories and love. Merle is, not surprisingly, an excellent storyteller; he did not begin his story with himself, but rather with his parents.

Merle’s father Richard (Dick), a former newspaperman in the Gorge, and his mom, Ioala Hlavka, felt compelled to start a small South County newspaper in 1986, though it began as something called the New Leaf . Prior to the Spotted Owl debacle of the 1980s and 90s, South Wasco County was a rather tight-knit, thriving corner of the world; however, with the decline in the timber industry as a result of the owl controversy, and the ultimate closure of lumber mills across the state after its official listing as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1990, the struggle for financial survival began to take its toll on the relationships between residents of the cities of South Wasco County.

Dick’s vision was to create a platform that would help folks from Wamic, Pine Hollow, and Rock Creek find common ground. In an effort to create a sense of ownership in this endeavor, they held a contest for renaming the paper, and Wampinrock was ultimately chosen as the all-inclusive winning title. Back then Dick typed everything up on a typewriter – never a computer – and pasted stories together with beeswax, then used a mimeograph to create copies. Back then, according to Merle, a lot of the news was “who’s visiting whom from Oklahoma” and equally important local goings-on. The paper was created, and continues, to bring people together. Such is the power of the written word.

Upon Dick’s death, his one request was that Merle and Donna not let the paper die with him. It has been a legacy that Merle considers both “an honor and a responsibility.” And for those of you who may be wondering: Yes, Merle does have a plan for the future of Wampinrock News .

Prior to settling back in South Wasco County, Merle spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He started out as an auto mechanic and quickly moved into administrative positions which included lengthy stints as both an efficiency expert and a statistical analyst; he retired from his military career at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, Alaska and continued to enjoy Alaskan life for a time before returning to care for his aging parents.

But those who know Merle also know that he has done much more for our community than faithfully keep the family vision alive; the shy and introverted accordion player and statistician is also a NASCAR junky. He loves stock car and dirt track racing and enjoyed emceeing races on the weekends – enough to drive Donna just a little bit crazy – until his old high school buddy, Mike Sofich, together with Scott Bell and Russ Lane, convinced him of the need for a grasscar track in Wasco County.

In true South County style, efforts were combined, and a rough track popped up in the middle of a field in Wamic, Oregon, on what is now the location of the largest grasscar operation on the West Coast. But their beginnings were not without a few bumps.

Merle recalls that on their first practice race attempt, Randy Marshall took a bad spill and ended up being Life-Flighted to Portland, though not before imploring them all to “Keep on racing!” Luckily Randy recovered from his extreme injuries and the group was able to make some improvements in operations and carry on.

Merle was named president of Sportsman’s Grasscar Lawn Mower Racing, Inc. – a non-profit organization – in 2008, and in 2009 they held their first official race. As a non-profit organization, Sportsman’s invests all race revenue back into track maintenance and improvements—after making a small annual donation to the Wamic Rural Fire Protection District—and the organization’s dedication to a high-quality race environment is evident.

Track operations are still a community effort, with the American Legion donating revenue from food sales to veterans and more than 100 different volunteers over the years showing up to help with everything from setting up to cleaning up. Jerry Tripp has set up scaffolding on turn four, and his cameras feed directly into Sportsman’s Pub and Grub, so spectators can even enjoy the show from indoors.

Ten years after that first near-tragic test drive around a make-shift track in the middle of nowhere, Sportsman’s is the only West Coast track to hold 13-14 races per season, drawing racers from all over the country, and they are looking forward to hosting the 2020 United States Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA) National Finals on Labor Day weekend next year—something to mark your calendars for, whether you are a racer, a fan, or an area business owner.

Two hours into our conversation, thoroughly entertained and with the deepest respect for this soft-spoken man who at the age of 17 was slated to become the next Myron Floren on his accordion, I see clearly how he has become the rock that continues to unite the people of South Wasco County with news and lawnmowers—and so much more.

May’s Business Spotlight: Deschutes Angler Fly Shop

“You would be amazed at how many people come here to go fishing but then just fall in love with Maupin . . . with the whole feeling you get when you come over the mountain and all of a sudden you’re in the sunshine and life slows down and your cell phone doesn’t work in a lot of places.” ~Amy Hazel, Deschutes Angler

In true Maupin fashion, I first learned a little about John and Amy Hazel’s origins over a beer at a barbecue. Amy was telling me about how, after a two-year, 19-country solo fly fishing trip in 1997 and 1998, she ended up being finagled, in a roundabout way by John, into buying a drift boat at a trade show. John had certain ideas about Amy from the start, and that drift boat deal turned into the beginning of a successful 21-year partnership.

I was fascinated by Amy’s story, so I followed up with a visit to Deschutes Angler, their destination fly shop next door to my office in Maupin. The first thing that struck me when I walked in was: Wow. How do you get a fly shop this big in a town this small? And according to John: “That’s the real story; it doesn’t happen in many places, and its kinda’ cool that it happens here, because it kinda’ puts Maupin on the map as a true destination area.”

But it didn’t happen by accident. John first came to Maupin in 1978 as a guide out of Portland. He was part of a movement in the early 1980s responsible for bringing the two-handed spey rod to the western United States. He spent a lot of time doing clinics, trainings, videos, and traveling to teach, building his reputation as an expert in the industry. He recalls that in those days guys would come out to Maupin to fish with the wrong supplies and equipment. Despite frustrations with limited local retail options, he continued guiding in Maupin for a couple decades.

Enter Amy, in 1998. After her solo, round-the-world fly fishing trip, she knew she wanted to work as a guide, but she didn’t realize there were restrictions on permits for guiding on the Deschutes. When John met her at the trade show and covertly secured her drift boat purchase, he saw real potential. He invited her to come to Maupin and hired her to row drift boat and learn from him. Pretty soon she was the first female guide on the Deschutes River. His instinct – to employ a female guide that would open the doors for other women to learn the sport – paid off. Bringing Amy on board took his business to the next level: “Women would come and fish and not feel intimidated. She increased the breadth of the company and the style and the image that John Hazel and Company had.”

As the business grew, so did the opportunity to outfit their clients with fly fishing supplies that the Hazels endorsed, so in 2003, John came off the river, walked into a building on Deschutes Avenue, rented it, and the couple opened their own fly shop. Back then, the Hazels occupied about 1/4 of their current space and worried about having too much room to fill. Since then they’ve expanded a few times. Now it is one of the largest fly shops in the state of Oregon. They make sure they carry a large inventory to serve their clients’ needs in the moment. John reasons: “It doesn’t do anybody any good to tell them we can get it for them by Tuesday. They’re going fishing now . They want it now .” Amy chimes in with what she considers their motto: “We have a big city selection with small town service. You don’t get that from Amazon.com.” And it’s true. Their customer service is unparalleled both in-store and on-line, which they’ve been offering since 2003.

John goes so far as to claim that the store wouldn’t exist without the internet. “If you’re gonna’ live in a town of 300 people, you’d better have a Plan B when it comes to retail. And our Plan B was the internet.” On-line sales offered them solid forecasting and accountability in retail sales. Now they sell to those who’ve come to Maupin, fished with them, and remain loyal to the experience as well as those who seek them out based on their combined reputation and credibility in the industry. And those customers buy again and again, to the tune of annual increases in internet sales of 5 to 8%, because they get world-class expertise and a hand-written note, often coupled with a follow-up phone call offering advise or tips. “We’re not just trying to shove stuff out of the store. We’re trying to help people get the right things they need. And then to help guide them into whatever else would work with that,” says Amy. “All our fly-tying materials are available on line, and most stores don’t do that. So we’re both a destination shop as well as a full-service, on-line shop. Plus we give back to the industry: We donate to fly clubs, Scouts, and schools. It’s not just about the money.” For John and Amy, it’s about the total experience that people have when they come to Maupin, when they fish local waters, and when they purchase goods and services from people they trust.

And that experience is truly a unique one. They offer year-round guided trips on the Deschutes in Maupin for trout and in the fall (July-November) for steelhead as well as spring and early summer trips on the John Day River for bass and for steelhead in late fall and into winter. The John Day River is a world-class big-mouth bass fishery and one of the only rivers left in the western U.S. that’s all wild fish. “That has huge appeal to catch-and-release fishermen,” says John.

The couple also leases a number of private lakes from ranchers around Wasco and Sherman Counties which offer outstanding still-water fisheries. It’s nice to have this option because there are times when someone has booked a three-day trip but realizes after the first day just how difficult the Deschutes can be to wade, their skills aren’t quite up to par, or they may have health issues that preclude them from three days on the river. They can easily shift to a private lake where they can sit and catch a bunch of big fish in a float tube. “It’s like a Lazy-Boy chair,” says Amy. Who wouldn’t love that? This diversity adds nuance to Maupin as a destination fishing vacation area. When people come to Maupin now from all over the world – and they do – they expect great food, a nice place to stay, and access to quality goods and services. And they get it.

Another impressive aspect of John and Amy’s business model is their dedication to the success of the Maupin community. There was a time when Amy would guide all day and then go home and make meals for the following day’s trips. Now, the team buys almost all their food from the Maupin Market. In addition, they purchase all their fuel from Rod at Richmond’s Station and get Henry at the deli to do all of their shuttles. They could easily hire their own employees to do much of this, but it’s nice to be able to pass the money through town. They encourage their clients to book their rooms here and book early and to take in all the local business offerings and events. John and Amy know the reality: “You take one business this size in Maupin: If it goes away, the grocery store takes a hit; fuel service is down; Henry’s shuttle service is negatively impacted, so everything begins to collapse.” In a town the size of Maupin, a successful business plan includes reciprocity.

While John might be looking at slowing down, Amy is working toward growth. Amy is a noted fly tier. She stays current, and virtually every book that’s published on fly tying includes a contribution by Amy Hazel. “Last night while John was sleeping in his chair, I was in the closet making videos of myself tying flies.” She makes and markets her videos using materials they carry in their store. She ties cutting-edge flies that aren’t a “dime-a-dozen” variety – flies that people haven’t even heard of yet. Or new styles of fly. Amy’s videos are available on Vimeo (for its high video quality), Instagram, and Facebook.

When I ask Amy what her vision is, what growth looks like to her, she has an immediate response: “I would like to just get the health of the river back. That’s how we’re going to get our growth, and that’s what we’re fighting for through our Deschutes River Alliance action.” For a couple who has built an entire life and a successful business on the river, it’s only natural to get excited about a decline in the health of that river. It’s a sentiment echoed daily in Maupin. If we don’t get the health of the river back, if we can’t “get the powers-that-be to recognize that what’s going on upriver is really impacting not only our economy but also the entire economy of Maupin and South Wasco County,” we could be in real trouble, stresses Amy.

Deschutes Angler also offers guided fishing trips to world destinations, including British Columbia, Honduras, Belize, Mexico, and Christmas Island.

The Maupin Siren: A Blast from the Past, by Nancy Wesson

It was a dark and stormy night. . . . No really, it was! The snow was tumbling down in big, fat wet flakes and the wind was blowing. Alright, no wind, but lots of snow and it felt stormy. I know this because – somewhere close to mid-night as I recall, I was out walking down my street searching for signs of life and anyone who could explain the reason for the three long, heart-stopping siren blasts that had just jolted me out of bed.

A relative newcomer to Maupin, I’d already become acquainted with the noon whistle , the speaker for which is perched on a stand near City Hall and the Library. My 10-month-old grandson and I were just walking up the steps to the library when this blast-from-the-past triggered a melt-down. His, not mine. Now immune to its effects, I’ve come to love this historic marker of the noon lunch hour—a left over from the days when the now-defunct lumber mill blew the whistle to announce lunchtime. Fortunately, City Fathers and the town opted to discontinue the 10:00 pm curfew siren sometime around the late 1980s.

But on this snowy night, I didn’t know whether to get my Go-Bag and evacuate, duck-and-cover, or just have a drink and brace for Armageddon. Yes, I exaggerate, but growing up in areas accustomed to hurricanes and tornados and having spent time in Cannon Beach, where a siren blast signals a tsunami, I am predisposed to think in terms of natural disasters.

My first clue to this not being Armageddon, was total calm. Either the end had come and I’d missed it or it wasn’t happening. The latter proved to be the case. The only people up and about were the newbies to our street who had noticed a fire truck headed up the hill. I got a text from another newbie a few blocks away and they were also going out to search.

Turns out all the long-time residents knew this was simply the announcement of a local emergency, in this case a fire that ended up being taken care of with a fire-extinguisher. According to Rod Woodside, owner of the service station which I’ve come think of as the heart-beat of Maupin, there used to be different signal patterns to indicate the type of emergency, but that has long since ended. Now, the blast is intended to alert the town, including Volunteer Fire Fighters and First Responders, who call or are contacted by the station for details.

There are those who think the siren should just go-away, while others suggest a less ear-splitting announcement: bells maybe. Cannon Beach has a novel approach for the public test of the tsunami-warning-system. In choosing a test-sound, the powers-that-be thought it best to have choose one that would get everyone’s attention, but not precipitate full–scale mayhem of the thousands of tourist wandering the streets and the beach. In case of a real even it’s the full-blast-siren, but the test sound is . . . wait for it . . . the mass-mooing of cows. So now, instead of running for the hills, beachgoers look for the stampede. So much better.

April Member Business of the Month: Imperial Bar and Grill

When Geoff and Valerie White leased the kitchen, restaurant, and bar at the Imperial River Company a year ago, they knew they wanted to honor the hard work that Rob and Suzie Miles invested before them while also putting their own mark on the endeavor, so they kept on many of the same staff and preserved the name but added a little bit of family – their daughters Kaylin and Madison both work with them – and their own blend of business and personal philosophy to create an inviting new space with the classic Lower Deschutes River hospitality. Now known as the Imperial Bar and Grill, it’s a place where “home town food and a fun-time feel” are available year-round.

When I sat down to visit with Geoff, Valerie, and Tami, the executive staff responsible for defining the vision at IB&G, it was clear they all understand that it is only through building people up and supporting community that everyone succeeds, and while a lot of folks in Maupin talk about the need for more family-wage jobs, this leadership team is making that a reality.

One of the important ways IB&G supports the local economy is by striving for farm-to-table eats whenever possible. All of their steaks, gourmet burgers, pork chops, and sausage are locally-raised, USDA Certified Organic. The beef is sourced from the family ranch, Circle V Maines, in Fox Valley, while the pork comes from Tygh Valley. Their aim is to not only employ strict quality standards in their food offerings but also to preserve a way of life and a sense of community through supporting sustainable local farming and ranching.

But their desire to deliver high quality doesn’t end there. The Whites’ philosophy is that “good, loyal, happy employees equal a good product.” To that end, they provide valuable year-round and seasonal employment for the area, with benefits packages to permanent, full-time employees – a business cost they see as a valuable investment in people and community. And their approach seems to be working, because every visit to the IB&G is met with loyal, dedicated staff who’ve succeeded in creating a warm, family-friendly atmosphere.

I’ve had many opportunities in the past year to sit and visit with Geoff and Valerie, in the newly-renovated bar, about everything from their knowledge of Maupin’s history (Valeria grew up in Maupin and has taken a ride or two down the Lower Deschutes as a river guide) to their vision for supporting Maupin’s future. Their dedication to giving back to the communities in which they live and work is genuine.

They’ve opened the IB&G conference room up for weekly spaghetti dinners to both the football and volleyball teams for team-building opportunities outside of school. They offer lunch-time specials for high school students and educator discounts. They welcome performers of all ages to their Tuesday open-mic nights, and along with the Imperial River Company, want to make sure everyone feels welcome to come down and enjoy the facilities – the sand volleyball courts and corn hole boards, the spacious lawn, and the riverside bench swings.

In addition, they sponsor many community events, including the upcoming Maupin Madness Poker Run that benefits military veterans. In short, they invest both time and money, because as Geoff says: “If you don’t give to the community, you can’t expect them to give to you.”

Welcome Maupin’s Newest Business Owner: Whitney Kilby, LMT

The first time I met Whitney Kilby, I was sitting on a chair in the river, enjoying the cool Deschutes running over my toes at Skinny Beach on a 100-degree day, when Whitney, Vernon (her Bernese puppy), and a couple bird hunting dogs pulled up in a Jeep and came bounding down the riverbank and into the water. Together, the group was a beautiful, high-energy burst of laughter and warmth, and after getting to know her over the past several months, I know that first day at the river revealed Whitney to the core: kind, warm, and full of life–all the attributes one looks for in a friend and in a medical professional.

Whitney is now a Licensed Massage Therapist, having graduated from Sage School of Massage in Bend in October of 2018. She made the arduous journey down Highway 97 to Bend and back four days a week for seven months in order to pursue a profession as a licensed health practitioner–a dream that was born during the eight years she spent tending to and providing end-of-life care for her grandma. She also spent four years in elder and memory care for The Springs at Mill Creek in The Dalles, and together, these experiences solidified her determination to pursue a career in the healing arts.

Maupin, Oregon Completes Gigabit Broadband Network, Bridging the Digital Divide (Press Release)

The municipal owned broadband network — one of the fastest in Oregon — improves opportunities for students and entrepreneurs while assisting first responders

March 12, 2019 (Maupin, Ore.) – With the completion of a $2 million high-density fiber optic broadband network, the rural community of Maupin, Ore., is now among the state’s most competitive when it comes to internet access. The network can provide speeds of 1 gigabit per second (gbps) per customer — the fastest broadband service available in the Pacific Northwest – vastly improving the city’s economic and educational opportunities.

The project, which took more than three years and financing from seven partners — including more than $935,000 from the State of Oregon — is a boon to the Central Oregon town of 430 better known for its access to whitewater rafting and fly-fishing along the Lower Deschutes River than its access to high-speed internet.

“This is a total game-changer for Maupin,” says Maupin Mayor, Lynn Ewing. “Our new high-speed broadband network significantly improves the professional and learning opportunities for residents while luring visitors to stay longer and even consider moving here.”

Before Maupin set out to build its own fiber optic network, the town had some of the state’s slowest upload and download speeds, putting businesses, job seekers and kids at a disadvantage. The city partnered with QLife Network , an inter-governmental agency that’s helping facilitate reliable, cost-effective, open-access link to fiber optic, and Portland-based LS Networks to design and install the network. Maupin received financial assistance from the Oregon state legislature, thanks to legislation introduced by former State Representative John Huffman of The Dalles, the Oregon Regional Solutions office, and QLife Network. The network was also made possible by investment from private partners including LS Networks, Gorge.Net , Google and the Gorge Health Council .

Efforts to bring high-speed broadband access to Maupin date back to 2014, when Maupin completed a feasibility study funded by Google to determine the cost of developing a high-speed broadband network. Initial funding was secured in 2015 and design of the network began in 2016, facilitated by QLife Network. Full build-out was completed in early 2019. Local service providers, Gorge.Net and LS Networks, worked through the winter storms to complete connections to individual buildings. Today, South Wasco County School District, White River Health District, Southern Wasco County Library, City Hall, and all of the more than 300 homes and businesses have full access to the network starting at $40 for 100 Mbps speed and $70 for 1 Gbps speed.

“Maupin remained steadfast in its pursuit of attaining higher-quality internet for its residents,” says Byron Cantrall, CEO of LS Networks. “Thanks to a combination of local champions and numerous partners willing to sit at the table together, Maupin now has broadband service that rivals the speeds enjoyed by those in Oregon’s biggest cities.”

New Oregon Broadband Office

In December, Governor Kate Brown signed Executive Order 18-31 establishing the Oregon Broadband Office, citing access to high-speed internet as an economic and equity issue. With an increasing number of cities and internet providers trying to determine how to bring broadband to their residents and customers, Maupin serves as an example for what can happen when public-private partnerships go well.

“The new high-speed fiber network in Maupin is proof that no town is too small or too remote to make sure their community is connected,” says Governor Kate Brown. “It will allow businesses in Maupin to grow and add new jobs while helping the school, health care providers, and local government to provide quality services. I appreciate all of the community support, including from the state’s Regional Solutions team, that improved access to high-speed internet for more Oregonians.”

A Boost for Doing Business in Maupin

Maupin’s broadband network, more affordable housing prices and safe neighborhoods are attracting more young professionals, business owners and families to settle there. “I have a dynamic and demanding work schedule, and I absolutely rely on high-speed internet to do my job,” says Michael Jones, director of research at San Francisco-based Salesforce. “But when I’m not working, I want to spend time getting to know my neighbors and being on the river.” He and his wife are in the process of moving from Portland to Maupin, where he will work remotely most of the time. “I think the word will get out and more telecommuters and tech companies will follow.”

In addition to its new broadband network, the City is beautifying its downtown, improving pedestrian walkways, and building a new 3,000-square-foot library as part of a new 6,000-square-foot Civic Center. “We say out here, ‘Things are hoppin’ in Maupin’,” says Mayor Ewing. “With 1 gigabit per second and numerous construction projects underway, that’s definitely true!”

Canyon Rim Manor

Virginia Cortez, Executive Director of Canyon Rim Senior Living Community in Maupin, has a straightforward and heartfelt philosophy when it comes to caring for her clients: “This is their home; we [the staff] are their guests.”

Canyon Rim currently has openings for both residents and staff. Consider joining the family, but know that this is a facility for those who genuinely care and respect others. Governor Appoints New Members to Oregon Tourism Commission

Governor Kate Brown has appointed two new members to the Oregon Tourism Commission (dba Travel Oregon), Mia Sheppard with Little Creek Outfitters and Greg Willitts with FivePine Lodge. Made up of nine members, the Commission provides expertise and sets policy direction for Travel Oregon staff.

Mia is an accomplished fly-fishing guide, mother and business owner. Mia and her husband Marty own Little Creek Outfitters, a fly-fishing guide service founded in 2003. In 2017, Mia started a new business, Juniper River Adventures, to connect women and youth to the outdoors.

“A dose of the outdoors warms the heart and soul,” said Mia. “I’m honored to be part of the Oregon Tourism Commission and be a voice for outdoor recreation, rural communities and work with Travel Oregon and the Commission to support sustainable tourism that benefits Oregonians and visitors.”

The Maupin Area Chamber presents the First Annual Maupin Daze Commemorative Poster Contest!The contest is open to all South Wasco County residents 18 years of age and older.

Winner Selection

There will be one grand prize winner.

All entries will be judged by a panel of judges. In the event of a tie, an additional judge will be added to the panel. Decisions of the judges shall be final in all matters related to this contest.

The winning image will be reproduced on posters and other products which will be printed and sold as limited editions in pre-sales, at the Maupin Daze event on May 18, 2019, and through the Chamber . Net proceeds will go to local youth programs.

February Member Spotlight: Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop

I recently had the opportunity to visit with John Smeraglio about his life here in Maupin, his love of the river that is our life-blood, and his business. John opened Deschutes Canyon Fly Shop back in 1985, with the goal of providing excellent products and service through guided trips and classes.

John’s passion is not only evident but contagious. As I listened to him describe what Maupin was like 30 years ago and how it has evolved, I was struck by the realization that he is one of those people who embodies the old Confucian sentiment: Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. He has turned his love of the river–and his belief that humans are gifted and burdened with the responsibility of stewardship and common sense when it comes to the resources we enjoy here in Maupin–into a livelihood, albeit one that is perpetually jeopardized by recent changes in river environment.

John’s knowledge of the river and all things fly fishing runs deep; he is enthusiastic about educating locals and visitors of all ages and experience levels and hosting special events throughout the year. John teamed up with Rick Hafele to create a trio of educational videos: Fly Fishing Large Western Rivers, Nymph Fishing Basics , and Advanced Nymph Fishing. He offers product demo days, stream-side entomology classes, clinics, casting lessons, and more. In his recent book, Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging , war correspondent, film maker, and writer Sebastian Junger claims: “If you want to make a society work, then you don’t keep underscoring the places where you’re different—you underscore your shared humanity.”

As 2019 unfolds, one of my goals as the new Chamber coordinator is to continue strengthening the Southern Wasco community—the sense of common unity among individuals and the prosperity of our commerce. These are the attributes that recently drew me to Maupin as a full-time resident and which will continue to attract new citizens with similar values as well as visitors who appreciate escaping the bustle of 21st-century life to bathe in the tranquil beauty of our place and our people.

How a boys curiosity about an ugly bug turned him into a life-long fisherman.

On a beautiful June afternoon, a boy was spending time with his father, fishing for trout on the Deschutes. The boy was gallivanting about when suddenly, in a nervous, high-pitched tone he screeched, “Yikes! What the heck is that?”

Spinning around, looking frantically for what he had flung off the back of his neck, he spotted a struggling critter. As it flailed away, falling deep into the thick, tall, wild, rye grass, inches from the river’s edge, he realized it was the ugliest bug he had ever seen.

With his hands held high and neck stretched out, much like a hunting heron, he slowly approached to get a closer look… at… whatever this … “thing” was that crashed onto him like a helicopter. Finally, getting a good look at the bug he muttered, “holy smoke, that bug is the size of my finger!”

The boy’s father, couldn’t help to notice all the noisy commotion his son was causing, and decided to see what his son was so excited about. The boy, encouraged his father to hurry up and said, “Dad, come here quick! You got to see this big, ugly, bug. It’s huge!”

As the father approached, he was able to see what his son was nervously pointing at and said, “well my boy, that is a Salmon Fly.”

The boy replied, “A Salmon Fly?”

“ A Stone Fly Adult, but it’s common nick-name is, Salmon Fly, one of the largest stoneflies in North America that is a water loving ecologically sensitive insect. The color of its body is a sort of a, orange, salmon color. Here I’ll show you.” said the dad.

The father starts to bend down to pick up the bug, when his son yells out, “wait! Won’t he bite you?”

“No, they don’t bite.” said the father.

The father gently gathered the bug off a blade of grass it was clinging to and slowly turned it over. The underside of the critter, was sure enough, orange as could be.

The boy realized that the big goofy looking thing was harmless and asked, “do trout eat these stupid things?”

The father answered with a smile, “Oh Yeah! You’d better believe they do.”

“Son, remember when I told you about the famous, ‘big, bug, hatch that happens in the spring on the Deschutes. This is the big bug I was talking about.”

“Oh yeah?” said the boy, “So, do the trout take them off the top of the water?”

The father, with an even bigger smile said, “those trout clobber-em!”

As they both plopped themselves down in the thick, spring grass to tie on their flies, initially, they didn’t notice the stone fly adults starting to fly over the river to deposit their eggs.

Splash! A big redside trout viciously slurps a Salmon Fly off the water just a couple feet from the bank. Ca-BOOM! Again, a trout destroyed the surface as it devoured another fat, juicy, salmon fly.

The frantic feeding activity caught their attention. “Holy crime-in-Italy! Do you see what’s happening Son?”

“Yeah Dad, I can’t believe my eyes. Well, it’s time to stop looking, and start casting!”

For the rest of the afternoon, those two trout happy clowns had the time of their lives. Hop-scotching around, catching big fish on big flies and laughing so much their sides hurt. This marked one of those rare days that sometimes words can’t describe. A father and son sharing time on a river that is so unbelievably beautiful, you can’t help fall in love with it. Needless to say, they shared this story time and time again during holidays and gatherings, with family and friends, for many year’s.

Grain Weights, Scandi/Skagit Heads, and Sink Tips

Being a new angler to using a double handed rod, all the tech stuff about lines and rods can be intimidating. It took me a few years to understand the mechanics of it and I’m still learning. Two handed rods are an effective tool on the lower Deschutes River for catching summer steelhead in the fall. Here’s s a bit about grain weights of Skagit and Scandinavian (Scandi) heads and how to find the right one for you and your rod.

The rod I used for summer steelhead fishing is the Echo, Tim Rajeff 6126 (12’6/ 6 weight). The line I use is an Airflow Scandinavian head 420 grains, 32 feet long. ( Scandinavian heads have a longer front taper to extend turnover and help achieve more distance.) Scandinavian heads are great for catching summer steelhead on light flies on or near the surface. Water temps in the summer are warmer so a fly does not need to go down deep. Scandi heads require a longer leader to help them anchor, recommended leader by Airflow is a 12-14′ Polyleader or 15′ Mono leader for optimum performance.

This winter I’m using the Gary Anderson 7133 (13’3/ 7 weight) with an Airflow Compact Skagit 480 grains, 23 feet head. Other lines recommended with this rod are 480 to 510 grains. Compact Skagit heads are designed to throw big flies and sink tips in tight confined spaces, perfect for winter steelhead fishing.

Skagit lines are denser then a Scandi. The Skagit line will turn sink tips over better better then the Scandi lines

Understand that Skagit lines are designed to throw sink tips and Scandi lines are designed to throw leaders. Because some sinking poly leaders look like sink tips it is easy to confuse the two, even though they are much different. If you were to put a poly leader (even a heavy sinking) on a Skagit line the performance will be sub par. The reason is how the energy is transferred to the attached tip.

Skagit lines have very little taper and transfer energy to the sink tip with a lot of power. Since even the heaviest poly leaders are much lighter than a light sink tip, if you put a poly leader on a Skagit head the power transferred through the poly leader will “crash” down onto the water long before a sink tip would “carry” into a nice turned over fly. Vice versa, Scandi heads have a longer taper and have a much “smoother” turnover. Given that the energy is getting softer as the fly turns over, if you have a sink tip on a Scandi head the leader will just flop down instead of a full turn over.

The easiest way to tell a poly leader and a sink tip apart is that a sink tip will need to have a nail knot added to attach a leader and a poly leader will have a mono core coming out from under the coating to attach the tippet.

Keep it simple and go fishing!

The Hunt

Under the summer sky, we drink scotch and talk about the consolations and I wonder how our ancestors followed the stars to guide them in their travels. Cygnus the Swan spreads his wings over us as he glides across the sky, and to the North, Cassiopeia is tied to her Throne.

I wake to the sound of a rumble, the morning train heads north on the track. Ron fires up the stove to start the coffee brewing. We fill our mugs and grab a bagel. I ask Ron if we should pack a lunch, He replies “we should have that Buck by daybreak.” I still throw some Oreo cookies and trail mix into my pack.

This summer I put in for a Mule deer, buck tag, in West Biggs. This is an area in Central Oregon that starts on the West side of the John Day River, and ranges to the Deschutes River. Some of the best places to hunt are in the Deschutes River canyons. The terrain is rugged, steep, and slippery. Ron Walp, a veteran hunter and fisherman on the Deschutes has taken me under his wing. Ron is a man that loves the outdoors; he has the greatest respect for the life that surrounds him. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to hunt with Ron and gain his knowledge of the river.

Ron started running a 50 HP jet boat up and down the Deschutes River to Macks Canyon in 1969. He and his friends have hunted Mule Deer in almost every draw and ridge from Macks Canyon down to the mouth and fished every inch of water . Each night under the stars Ron points out the constellations and tells us stories about his friends as if it was yesterday, and all the bucks they have taken from the tops of peaks that take hours to pack out.

I hope we find a “River Buck” so the pack is within view of the boat.

We load up the boat and head to a spot where Carol Chapman, (Ron’s significant other, has a buck tag too) and Ron have seen two buck over the last few days. We get out binoculars had scan the hillside, nothing in view, they could be bedded down in the draw. Carol and I throw on our packs and sling our guns over our shoulder and plan a recon mission to the first point on the ridge overlooking the draw. Every few steps we stop and scan a section of hillside that comes into view for us. We try to be stealth but the basalt shale slides out from under out feet.

We reach the ridge and hide down under an outcropping; we see Rocky Mountain sheep in the distance but no Mule deer. Ron suggests we hike up the draw to the top and go down the backside into another draw. I have a fair amount of hiking under my belt, that shouldn’t be a problem.

Over the next few days I hike up ridges and side step down shale faces, toes are pressed against the front of my boots, they ache with pain and become numb. By the time I reach camp, they feel as if someone has taken a hammer to them. The country I’m scaling is rugged and meant only for animals with hooves. I’m physically challenged beyond belief but the rewards of seeing new country, and the wildlife that inhabits this magnificent place, and watching the behavior of coyotes, sheep and deer form a distance grazing , hillsides ramming heads is worth every step.

It’s not about the harvesting, it’s about the camaraderie of friends, drinking scotch under the stars, and getting out experiencing life greater than us.

My bag is packed and I’m ready to go again.

Carol harvested a nice buck the next day. She said she was shaking so bad she could hardly stand up. Way to go Carol!!

It’s about that time of year again here in the Deschutes River Canyon near Maupin; bird hunting season. There are a variety of upland birds to hunt in Oregon, but each species has its own season and rules . Get to know the best game birds to hunt in Wasco County and when to book your next bird hunting trip at Imperial River Company.

Upland Bird Preserve Hunting

Season: Sep 1 – Mar 31; Daily Bag Limit: Varies by Package

For anyone unfamiliar with the area or in search of a guaranteed hunt, Sage Canyon Outfitters has a great preserve for Chukar and Pheasant hunting near Maupin. With preserve hunting, there are fewer regulations, which equates to more birds in the bag. You can hunt with a guide and even an experienced bird dog or head out onto the 9300 acre preserve on your own. You don’t need an expensive hunting license to shoot pheasant or chukars on the preserve, but you will need to purchase a $6 permit for the day.

Whether you decide to hunt the preserves near Maupin or head out into the Deschutes River Canyon for wild game, get to know your prey, their habitat, and a few bird hunting tricks for a successful haul this season:

Ring-Necked Pheasant

ODFW Season: Oct 11 – Dec 31; Daily Bag Limit:2 (8 in Possession)

Did you know that Oregon was the first state in the US to introduce ring-necked pheasants?After their first successful transplant from China in 1882, they’ve become well-known residents of our grain fields. With so many wheat fields surrounding the Deschutes River Valley and the Maupin area, pheasant are abundant. You can only hunt the males, known as roosters, though, so keep an eye out for their tell-tale red face and white collar. Their rooster-like crowing can be heard for up to a mile away, and hunters often use pheasant calls to attract males competing for females.

In the morning and late afternoon, you can fund them feeding in wheat fields, and during the heat of the day, you’ll find them at the edge of fences and fields recharging for their next feeding.Bird dogs are recommended, and our best advice is to shoot at the front 1/3 of the pheasant’s body. Many new hunters aim for the center, forgetting to compensate for the long tail that makes the bird’s kill zone appear longer.

Chukars

ODFW Season: Oct 11 – Jan 31; Daily Bag Limit: 8 (24 in-possession)

A type of partridge, the chukar can be found on the steep rocky slopes of the Deschutes River valley and the Cascade Mountains. Both the Chukar and its food course, cheat grass, were introduced to Oregon in the 50s. Since then, it’s flourished, making its home in areas where development and agriculture would be less than practical.

Their dangerous habitats make them one of the most difficult game birds to hunt. Since they tend to run uphill though, try spotting them with binoculars from the top of the ridge and approaching from above in some sturdy hiking boots.

As the summer heats up, more and more boats hit the Deschutes River to take advantage of the plentiful waters and wildlife. Before you hit the waves in your boat this year, be sure to follow our boating safety tips to keep you and your family safe on the water.

Create a Pre-Departure Checklist

When ensuring you have done everything necessary to properly prepare for your trip, it can be difficult to keep everything straight. This leads to items being forgotten or important details overlooked. That’s why it’s a good idea to create a pre-departure checklist. Make sure it includes everything you need to bring, like water, life jackets, and fishing supplies, and also make sure it includes everything you need to check, like fuel and oil levels, safety gear, and weather. If you take a boating course, which is recommended, you’ll learn how to create the right pre-departure checklist for your boat.

Designate an Assistant Captain

If it’s your boat, you’ll likely be the one driving it, but sometimes you can’t be the person behind the wheel. Just in case something should happen and you can’t take the wheel, it’s a good idea to have at least one more person who can drive the boat for you. Let everyone know who your assistant captain is, so there are no arguments should the event arise they need to take action.

Communicate Your Float Plan

Even if you follow our safety precautions, boating is not inherently safe. Because of this, it’s important to let someone know your float plan. This should include contact information for everyone on the trip, your boat’s type and registration info, and your itinerary. Make sure your itinerary shows all the places you’ll hit along the way so people know where to search should you go missing.

Use Required Safety Gear

On many waterways, safety gear like lifejackets are required. It’s important that you have one for every person on the trip and that they fit properly. Checking the fit should be part of your pre-departure checklist. As an added note, it’s also important that everyone on board knows how to swim. Although they’ll be wearing life jackets, this is an extremely important life-saving skill to have.

Use Common Sense

Following safety precautions like these is a no brainer, but when you’re out on the water, make sure you’re using that brain! Use common sense when navigating busy waterways, keep clear of large vessels, drive at a safe speed, and don’t drink alcoholic beverages.

A Brief History of Whitewater Rafting

Whitewater rafting has become a very popular water sport in Oregon and across the United States. It didn’t start out as a whitewater raft with professional guides though. Instead, it has evolved over time as various cultures and generations have passed on their knowledge and their techniques for navigating the white water of many a river.

The Fishing Rafts of Northwest Native Americans

Here in the northwest, rafting has been an important part of the fishing techniques of several Native American tribes. For almost 15,000 years, the Nez Perce, among other tribes, navigated the many rivers that serve as tributaries to the Columbia River. They did not have flexible rubber rafts though. Instead, they used wooden rafts to float down the river in order to get to their plentiful fishing spots. When Lewis and Clark arrived in the west, it was from these tribes that they learned how to build rafts strong enough to navigate the whitewater of rivers like the Deschutes.

East and West Coast Rafts

Some of the original rafts used in our area and across the US were very simple but effective. The pirogue was a flat-bottom boat that had a few different designs and it was most commonly used in the West. The Bateau was an Eastern developed raft that was made of a simple frame with planks. Eventually, rafters combined the best qualities of these two boats to create the keelboat. It’s most notable difference was that it had a streamlined hull, which was much better for controlling the direction of the raft.

The Invention of Rubber Rafts

Once whitewater rafting became more commonplace, more rafting expeditions began to emerge. Most rivers though, including the Snake River and Platte River, were still too rough for the keelboat design. That‘s why in 1843, John Fremont designed the first rubber raft, which was later improved by Peter Halkett in 1844. These flexible boats made it much easier to navigate rough waters, making river expeditions across the US more successful.

The Rise of Whitewater Rafting as a Sport

It wasn’t until a full century later that whitewater rafting evolved into a recreational sport. In 1940, the Salmon River became one of the first to host guided rafting trips through its white waters. The popularity of the spot grew throughout World War II and really began to spread to other rivers. In 1972, whitewater rafting became an official sport and made its first appearance at the Munich Olympics. Since then, whitewater rafting has thrived in rivers with great rapids and where communities embraced outdoor adventure.

Today, the Deschutes River is one of the most popular rivers for whitewater rafting in the Northwest. People come from across the country to experience the many outdoor wonders of the Deschutes River Canyon and to challenge themselves with Class III and IV rapids. Historic Landmarks Around Maupin

The Central Oregon area is home to scenic landscapes and some great outdoor recreation. It is also the home of many historic landmarks that have been preserved by the small communities in the area. If you’re planning a trip to Maupin, make sure you stop and see a few of these historic landmarks.

POWER HOUSE AT WHITE RIVER FALLS STATE PARK

White River Falls State Park is known for beautiful waterfalls and scenic hikes. Many Central Oregon visitors stop there to hike and camp. The park is also known for its power station. The Pacific Power and Light Company, once known as Tygh Valley State Wayside, was built in 1910. It provided electricity to the area until 1963. Then, in 1969, the company donated over 200 acres to the state. Now a popular state park, the old power station can still be seen by visitors.

THE BARLOW ROAD

Another piece of history near Maupin is the Barlow Road . Built in 1846 by Philip Foster and Sam Barlow, the road was created to be one of the last legs of the Oregon Trail. Pioneers were better able to traverse the Cascade Range in their wagons once this road was finished. Now, the road remains and many visitors take it from Tygh Valley to up and over Mt. Hood as a scenic route.

SHERARS FALLS

During the 19th Century, Joseph Sherar and his wife operated a toll bridge, stagecoach station, and hotel on the Deschutes River near Maupin. The couple bought and improved an existing bridge near what’s now known as Sherars Falls , a popular fishing spot for natives in the area. Although a new concrete bridge has replaced the wagon bridge, remnants of the fishing platforms can still be seen.

GHOST TOWNS

If you love old buildings and the Wild West, then you’ll want to check out Wapinitia and Shaniko . Although these communities are no longer active, there are still buildings and remnants to explore. At Wapinitia, you’ll find the remains of the Wapinitia Hotel, saloon, schoolhouse, church, and more. At Shaniko, you can check out wagons, stagecoaches, and many historic buildings that were preserved and moved from nearby areas. They actually set up an entire town so visitors could get a feel for what it was like back in the days of the Wild West.

ATV Safety in Central Oregon

Riding an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) can be a whole lot of fun, but it’s undoubtedly dangerous, especially if you go out when conditions are bad. You need to practice safety whenever you ride an ATV, and that safety begins long before you even step outside. Here are some tips for making sure that you maximize your fun, minimize your risk, and have a blast on Oregon’s premier trails.

CHECK CONDITIONS

If you’re going on a road trip, it’s always a good idea to check road conditions beforehand in case there’s a storm, a large traffic jam, or a highway closed for construction. It will save you time and keep you safe if you look this information up first. The same logic should be applied to ATV riding, and perhaps even more so. Different terrains have different conditions to look out for, and some are bad enough to get a trail closed down completely.

One of the attractions near Maupin is Rock Creek Trails. These are great fun, but under certain conditions, they can be dangerous. For example, after a rainstorm, it’s possible that the ground may become muddy. If the wind or lightning is extreme enough, trees might be knocked over on the path. You should also be wary of conditions like excessive snow, dust storms, poor lighting, and paths overrun with plants.

CARRY ESSENTIAL ITEMS

On Oregon public land, you’ll need to have a current ATV permit sticker. You’ll also need your VIN number. This is standard procedure and you can purchase these stickers at Maupin Hardware. Another must-have is a Riders Safety Card. These come in family and individual versions, and they’re absolutely free. If you have a young rider with you, someone between the ages of 6 and 15, they’ll also need an Oregon ATV Safety Youth Riders endorsement card. If you don’t have these cards, you’re not protected.

In addition to all of that identification, you’ll certainly want to bring a helmet on your head and protective clothing on your back. This means goggles to protect your eyes, boots on your feet, gloves on your hands, and long-sleeved shirts and pants. For communication if you get stranded, cellphones are a modern lifesaver – be sure to take one with you that’s fully charged. If your ATV is damaged or breaks down, you’ll want to have a toolkit to try to make some basic repairs.

Finally, for ultimate safety, bring a first aid kit to deal with injuries. Riding around the Deschutes River is unforgettable, but you need to be mindful of your surroundings so you stay safe out there.

HOTEL CONDON IN CONDON

There’s a feeling you get when you’re being watched. It’s hard to explain, but most of us have a sixth sense for such things. Expect to feel that a lot when you’re visiting Hotel Condon. Built in 1920, this is an elegant and historic hotel with plenty of beautiful western scenery to get lost in. Just don’t be surprised if you’re one of the guests who spots an apparition of a woman wearing 1880s clothing or notices lights going on and off by themselves. The old west could be a pretty scary place.

Where to Fish Near Maupin

Give a man a fish, feed him for a meal. Teach a man where the best spot to fish is in Central Oregon, and give him recreation for a lifetime. There’s no better place to enjoy fishing than in the lower part of the Deschutes River. There are a lot of great reasons why this part of the river has the best fishing near Maupin, and perhaps anywhere, period.

FLY FISHING

Here’s a dare: Try fly fishing in the Deschutes River, and then go try the other rivers in the Pacific Northwest. We bet you’ll come back to the Deschutes River, because it’s truly a premier fly fishing river. For one, the Deschutes River has a trout stream with native fish only. That’s an important distinction in today’s global world with so many invasive species. Not far from the trout, you can find summer steelhead, which are amazing to behold.

However, what really makes the Deschutes River a great place to fly fish is the hatching. In the summer, the Pale Morning Duns and Caddis hatches are an incredible sight. If you bring the right flies, you’re sure to get some good fish on your plate. Just keep in mind, if you attend any fishing attractions near Maupin, don’t fish from a boat. It’s against the law, so you’ll need to anchor your boat up and fish from the side.

THE SCENIC ROUTE

Here’s a three-day trip plan for you, if you want the full knowledge of what Maupin can offer. You’ll see 30 miles of lower Deschutes River, far away from the public roads or the hustle and bustle of the city. From there, follow the river.

There are lots of guided tours along the way with boats that can share there is to see. Some tours even will set up camp with you. You’ll never see so many stars and such a pretty landscape all in one place anywhere other than camped out by the Deschutes River.

Next, head down the river to fish for some trout and steelhead. Beavertail is a great place in particular for steelhead in the early fall. When you finish your travels, you should end up right in Maupin.

FISHING NEAR MAUPIN

If you really like steelhead, venture out to Mack’s Canyon and go twenty miles toward the mouth of the river. Just know that you won’t be getting there by road. If you want to be like most anglers, you can drift your way there, but jet boats are technically allowed for the most adventurous out there.

Geocaching Treasure Hunts Near Maupin

If you love the outdoors and want to channel your inner pirate, consider going on a treasure hunt in the form of geocaching. Geocaching is a popular recreational activity all over the United States, and central Oregon has several notable geocaching adventures just waiting to be explored.

WHAT IS GEOCACHING?

Geocaching is like a treasure hunt for nature lovers. The basic idea is that a geocacher, one who participates in geocaching, will receive a set of coordinates somewhere in the world. Then, using a GPS, they will make their way to the place these coordinates represent. Once they arrive, the geocacher will find a waterproof container. The container might be hidden in the environment so that it isn’t too easy to spot for those who are not aware a geocache is nearby. In the waterproof container is a logbook where the geocacher can sign his or her name victoriously. Variations exist where you may take or add a small item of some sort to the container. Finally, the geocacher is required to return the container to its original resting place. This way, the next geocacher will have the same enjoyable experience finding it.

GEOCACHING IN MAUPIN

Given the amazing high desert biome near Maupin, it should be no surprise that it has many geocache coordinates ready to be investigated by ambitious adventurers. The Maupin Area Chamber of Commerce has been giving specially marked Geocoins to those who complete a passport that includes a dozen geocaches in the area. This initiative is called the Historical Maupin GeoTour. Two of the geocaches in the Historical Maupin GeoTour were preexisting, made by Maupin locals enjoying the area.

The Historical Maupin GeoTour still has 30 coins to give out to those who complete the passport. In order to do this, a geocacher must visit all twelve locations and recover a code word from the geocaches. These twelve locations will take you all around the beautiful Oregon landscape. A geocacher will see landmarks like the Deschutes River and relics like the Maupin railroad, not to mention Oregon’s natural wonders.

For example, one of the locally made geocaches directs the geocacher to Sherars Falls, a breathtaking cascade down the Deschutes River. Geocaching is a unique recreational activity that gives locals and tourists in central Oregon a chance to see the area in a fun new light. Not only will you find a treasure at the end of your journey, but you’ll also encounter a treasure during the journey: Oregon’s natural beauty.

Top 5 Hooved Animals to Hunt in Central Oregon

BLACK TAILED DEER

The black tailed deer are common residents of Western Oregon that actually migrate to lower elevations when winter snow threatens to come in. This species of deer is known for their breeding season, a sixty day span that begins in November and ends in December. The doe is pregnant all winter with the fetus developing slowly, and as food becomes plentiful again, development quickly speeds up, leading to birth in late spring or early summer.

ELK

Elk are a very common sight through Oregon, found in a variety of regions, including mountain meadows, plains, valleys, and foothills. These are the second most popular game animal to hunt after deer. An elk’s diet includes grasses, twigs, bark, and herbs. BIGHORN SHEEP

Bighorn sheep are found through southern Canada in British Columbia and Alberta, as well as the mountainous western United states. After being virtually eliminated in the U.S., the bighorn sheep are making a comeback. They’re still quite rare, so any hunter who gets a tag for a bighorn sheep can’t draw it again. Because they live in steep mountain terrain, you have to be pretty fit to hunt them.

MULE DEER

Mule deer are found more in the open country in western North America. Their diet consists of shrubs and twigs primarily, but they’re known to eat grasses and herbs too. Like with elk, deer hunting offers a lot of flexibility in time of year and weapon, with a season for rifle hunting, archery hunting, and even muzzleloader controlled hunts.

PRONGHORN ANTELOPE

Pronghorn antelope are another western big game animal, but not found on the coast. Unlike other hoofed mammals, antelope aren’t a protected species, probably because there are about 25,000 antelope in the state. They’re known for their speed, as they are able to hit speeds of 40 miles an hour. You’ll find them living in low sagebrush plains and open prairies.

If you enjoy stalking these big game animals, you might want to try hunting in Maupin. Besides the great weather and spectacular high desert scenery, you’ll find ample hooves and horns on your hunt.

Maupin Camping Etiquette

Camping is a staple near Maupin. After all, if you’re going to venture into nature for the day, away from the city, it can be inconvenient to try to make it all the way back by dusk. And besides, there’s actually a lot of fun to be had in the wild at night. The fly fishers will like the late hatches on the Deschutes River, hikers will like the sunset, and birdwatchers will like the night activity of some of our rarer birds. SAFETY FOR YOU AND OTHERS

We have many great camp sites in Central Oregon, like The Oasis, for one. At sites like this, safety is the number one priority. Be sure to follow these safety guidelines to ensure that you and your loved ones can have a fun time without worrying.

First off, don’t feed the animals. They’ll want more food, and if you don’t give it to them, they might become aggressive. Worse yet, many of them will become dependent and come back to the spot to bother the next guests. When you arrive at the campsite, inspect it closely. You’ll want to do this so that, when you’re packing up, you can make it look the same way it looked when you got there. Many attractions near Maupin can be ruined for others if you’re careless or messy, and that’s not fair.

As important as it is to respect the campgrounds, you should also respect nature. For instance, you may find it tempting to take natural souvenirs, like a beautiful flower you noticed, but the next person will probably love the flower just as much as you did. A less well-known piece of camping etiquette is not to bring firewood from elsewhere. Buy it close to the campground instead. Why? Because firewood from other places can bring disease or invasive insects. If you intend to build a fire, take all the necessary precautions to prevent a forest fire. When you’re done, put the fire out completely.

Respect for the other campers is the final piece of etiquette to remember. When it’s late at night, you should stay quiet. If you’re fishing, give the others some space. Play your music quietly and keep your camp within its reserved space.

Sherars Falls Bikeway to Become Oregon Scenic Bikeway

Did you know Oregon is the only state in the entire United States of America to have a Scenic Bikeways program? Oregonians should be proud of their bicycle program, and citizens of Maupin can be proud that the Sherars Falls Bikeway is becoming an official Oregon Scenic Bikeway. Both bicycle enthusiasts and nature lovers will enjoy the beauty and grace of the bikeway and the peaceful Sherars Falls, the last of many waterfalls on the Deschutes River.

THE HISTORY OF SHERARS FALLS

Sherars Falls has been an important site for Native Americans for over at least 150 years. Even today, the Warms Springs Nation, a tribe of Native Americans, can be seen fishing at and around Sherars Falls on the Deschutes River. The beautiful cascade has featured many bridges over the years. The first bridge was built in 1860 by a man named Jason Todd, but had to be rebuilt after only two years when a flood washed the bridge away. In 1871, the bridge was rebuilt again by Joseph Sherar, the namesake of the bridge and the falls. Mr. Sherar spent over $70,000 to build the bridge and to connect roads to the area. That’s over $1.25 million in today’s money!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE AN OREGON SCENIC BIKEWAY?

The Oregon Scenic Bikeway Program has bikeways of all shapes, sizes, and difficulties. In order to officially be an Oregon Scenic Bikeway, a course must go through a rigorous examination to make sure that it is safe, fun, and showcases the best Oregon has to offer. Now, Sherars Falls Bikeway has passed its inspection and will be added to the diverse lists of locales. The Sherars Falls Bikeway is a relatively difficult course, especially for amateur bikers, including several slopes that are quite steep. The course has many hairpin turns as well, and there’s wind that can be tough to ride against. On the bright side, traffic is fairly light near Maupin , so you will not be competing with cars to get where you want to go.
